7 Unique Oil Boiler Maintenance Service Requirements

Oil boilers have unique maintenance service requirements compared to natural gas, propane, or electric heating systems. But like all heating equipment, they require routine service to avoid breakdowns and emergency repairs. Oil-fired boilers have efficiency ratings up to 85% or even higher, so they are among the most cost-saving heating options available. These are some oil boiler services that can maintain an optimal efficiency level.

  1. Fill the Oil Tank

During winter, your heat and hot water requirements are higher, so your boiler may use oil more quickly. Therefore, checking the oil tank is important. If the oil level gets too low, moisture and debris may clog the tank or oil line, while sludge can clog the burner. Any contamination will reduce boiler efficiency, requiring a professional to service the unit.

To determine the oil level, check the oil tank’s gauge. Try not to let it fall below ¼ of a tank full. Oil is typically delivered by truck, so you must place an order with the delivery company. The driver usually fills the tank by attaching a hose to it. Once the tank is filled, the boiler may need to be reset; if the system doesn’t relight, you’ll need a heating contractor.

  1. Check for Water in the Tank

Water ingress can bring debris into the tank, causing the boiler to run less efficiently. A technician can perform a dip test. This lets them find signs of water ingress so they can take steps to resolve the issue. Otherwise, the oil line can be damaged and water inside it can freeze. A heating contractor should also check for impurities in the lines.

  1. Check the Water Pressure

In sealed heating systems, it’s important to check the water pressure. Low pressure can be a sign of a leak or other problem, especially if it occurs frequently. Opening the filling loop can restore the pressure to a normal range.

Fortunately, identifying a pressure drop is easy. Just look at the boiler’s pressure gauge. Finding the cause of low pressure or frequent drops is a different story. You’ll need a professional to inspect the system and perform repairs if necessary.

  1. Install a New Nozzle

If the nozzle is blocked, the flow of oil will be restricted, reducing boiler performance. The nozzle should be changed during every oil boiler service. This is an important part of maintenance because oil often congeals inside the nozzle during normal operation.

  1. Clean Out the Trap

The trap collects condensation and water vapor formed during the heating process. A clogged trap can cause your boiler to shut down. Having the trap cleaned professionally improves the system’s reliability. It should be a part of your annual boiler service.

  1. Check for Deposits on Electronic Components

If electrodes, photocells, and other electronic components in your boiler get covered in soot, the system can malfunction. Too much soot can prevent an oil boiler from lighting at all. At Call the Whale, our maintenance technicians clean your boiler’s electronic components to avoid or mediate performance issues.

  1. Perform a Visual Inspection

You can also check your boiler on occasion. Whether you or a heating contractor inspects the unit, corrosion is one of the main concerns to look for. It can affect the main boiler unit, a radiator, or pipes. Water additives can inhibit corrosion, or a technician can add a magnetic filter to the system. Other issues to look for include water leaks, abnormal pressure levels, and unusual noises. Error codes should be noted and communicated to a maintenance technician who can diagnose and fix the underlying issue.

When Should I Schedule Oil Boiler Services?

Your oil boiler should be serviced once a year. Fall is a good time to request maintenance. Or, you can even schedule an oil boiler service in the summer. You’re not likely to be using the system, which will need to be shut off while being serviced. Early maintenance also avoids issues when you turn your heating system on for the first cold snap.

How Long Does an Oil Boiler Service Take?

Servicing an oil-fired boiler shouldn’t take more than two hours. That’s not too much time out of your schedule. To make the job easier for your heating contractor, clean the outside of the boiler, remove nearby obstructions or hazards, and make a note of any issues to explain to them.
